Secretlivesofscientists’s Weblog

{June 19, 2009}   To scientificate is human

“Every scientist has their own pet theories about what is really happening. It’s what leads to bitch-fights at conferences and meetings: two people will have completely diametrically opposed oppinions regarding some result, and each of them will believe that the exact same result proves his or her own pet theory is correct and that the other person’s theory is bullshit. But science is not reality, and science is not nature. Science is a construct of man, a man-made model which is based on what man sees and believes is consistant with reality and nature. All models are incorrect by virtue that they are models. Some models, however, are useful. I think a lot of scientists aren’t able to make that distinction.”

Looks like sound wisdom to me.

The ones who can make the distinction are more properly termed “engineers”.
