{January 26, 2009}   Gun show bootay!

White Mike and I went to the fun show to pick up a vertical grip for my new AR15. The rifle arrived on Friday, and I finally have a picture for the blog. Here it is, in the new family portrait, in all it’s glory:

guns

-

The lower billet is by Arizona Armory

-The barrel is 14 inches, 1/7 twist, NATO 5.56 chrome-lined (the legal 16 inches with the compensator – thanks, John from KR Training, for correcting me!)

- The rails are ultralight floating rails by Daniel Defense, with snap-on rail protectors

-Match trigger

- Magpul collapsible stock, pistol grip and p-mag

- Battle grip by Tango Down

- Total weight is about 8 lbs. I’m not kidding. Diminuitive little thang, aint she?

The Battle grip is badass and worth the coin ($60) over the $15 standard grips which screw in to the lower rails through the bottom of the grip. The quick detach system is surprisingly sturdy. The best feature is the storage compartment within the grip. Since the grip doesn’t have a big bolt running all the way through it, the cap unscrews to reveal a little storage compartment, perfect for holding extra batteries and some gun lube, or whatnot. A pressure switch can also be mounted on the side of the grip. It’s pretty sweeeeeeeeeeeet.

Can’t wait to take her to the range this weekend and get all sighted in!

I also picked up a clever little bumper sticker on my way out of the convention center:

TXGunGeek says:

Actually, the legal length is 16″ not 14″. Unless you get BATFU approval for an SBR in which case the 11″ would do just fine.

secretlivesofscientists says:

Oops. My bad. I think the barrel is 14, with the extra length added by the compensator. Thanks for pointing that out.

Alan says:

Very Nice! And it’s evil looking enough to make Sarah Brady cry. (double win!)

Hey COOL! I also put that stock and the MIAD grip on mine – only I can’t get a 30-round P-mag in CA (boo-hoo) – and my Tango battlegrip has the QD lever and is a stubby. :-)

secretlivesofscientists says:

Cute! Not the lame-o CA gun laws, but the stubby grip. I mean, badass, not cute ;)

Ted says:

That POP!!! sound you just heard is half the heads in Massachusetts exploding. Well done!

secretlivesofscientists says:

The credit for the AR goes to Shoothouse Ken (aka boyfriend). He bought all the parts ‘cept for the battle grip.

RevolverRob says:

Very nice, now you just need a shotgun to compliment the collection there.

When you get to adding a flashlight…well, there’s ergonomics to consider. Not all rails are alike in terms of their distances from each other.

[...] My optics budget is $600. Open to other recommendations, just heard that Aimpoint is very choice. I have Daniel Defense floating rail system, and the rifle looks like this. [...]
